Xinyi is a first-year Psychology student at the University of Manchester and an international student originally from China. She loves singing and playing the piano, and enjoys capturing moments through photography. She is passionate about wellbeing, connection, and using creativity to bring people together.
We’re delighted to welcome Xinyi as a new volunteer at our Bridgewater Hall Creative Community Hub. Xinyi brings enthusiasm, warmth and a genuine commitment to creating inclusive spaces where people of all ages feel connected and valued. We’re so pleased to have her as part of the IMM community here’s what she had to say about getting involved:
Why I decided to volunteer:
I was really inspired by IMM’s mission of using music to bring people together across generations. I’ve always loved music, but I’ve never experienced it in a setting like this before. I was curious to see how music could create connection and belonging in a community space.
As a new student in Manchester, I also wanted to get involved locally and contribute in a meaningful way. Volunteering felt like a beautiful way to connect, learn, and give back.
What I got of my first session:
It was such a warm and uplifting experience. I truly enjoyed it! Singing and making music together with children, adults, and older people in the same space felt really special. I’d never experienced something so intergenerational before.
As it was my first time volunteering in the UK, I was quite nervous at the beginning, but the team was incredibly supportive and encouraging. By the end of the session, I felt more confident and proud of myself for stepping out of my comfort zone. It was a meaningful and joyful experience.
