Talking Generations Digital: Bridging the Divide
Intergenerational Music Making (IMM) is proud to launch Talking Generations Digital: Bridging the Divide. a 12-month, large-scale intergenerational programme designed to tackle digital exclusion, reduce loneliness, and build stronger, more connected communities through creativity and shared learning. At a time when access to technology is essential for everyday life, too many older adults remain digitally excluded. At the same time, young people are seeking meaningful opportunities to build skills, confidence, and purpose. This programme brings both generations together in a powerful, reciprocal model of learning and connection.
What we’re doing
Talking Generations Digital integrates digital inclusion into our established intergenerational music making sessions, ensuring that learning feels natural, creative and accessible. Each session will include digital activity, embedded within a wider programme of music-making, storytelling and shared creative experiences. Activities include:
-
Recording and sharing personal stories and memories
-
Creating music using accessible digital tools
-
Sending messages and learning to communicate safely online
-
Capturing voice notes, interviews and short films
-
Exploring how technology can connect generations
-
Participants build confidence gradually, supported in a relaxed and inclusive environment.

The Digital Buddy model
At the heart of the programme is our Digital Buddy model. Young people are trained to support older participants with using technology from basic device use to creative digital activities. In return, older participants share their experiences, stories, and perspectives creating a meaningful exchange that builds confidence, empathy, and mutual respect across generations. Delivery will take place across community settings in Manchester and Surrey, including libraries, care homes, youth centres, and schools.

Creating a lasting legacy
The programme will also develop the Talking Generations Digital Hub where participants’ will have access to creative resources and conversation tools offering accessible learning materials designed for all abilities. This programme is about more than digital skills, it is about building confidence and independence, reducing loneliness and isolation, strengthening communities across generations, empowering young people as leaders and mentors plus ensuring no one is left behind in an increasingly digital world.
